DIY Floyd Platform Bed

DIY

The original Floyd platform bed retails between $975-$1500. I bought the Floyd Frame Hardware for $215 (memorial day sale) and decided to DIY the wood panels and saved around $600 total as I didn’t add a headboard and used birch plywood.

Materials Needed

  1. 22"W x 86"D (3x) I went with 1.5" thick birch plywood but you can go up to 3" (panels ordered off Floyd's site are 3").

  2. Orbital Sander - here is the one I used from Amazon for $30

  3. Polyurethane sealer + stain (if you want)

  4. plywood edge finisher strips

Step 1

Go to your nearest Home Depot and head to the lumber section. Pick out 2 sheets of high-quality plywood, minimum 1.5 thick - I would recommend 3” to fill the hardware and make sure it’s a tight fit.

If you’re lazy like me, take them to the back of the store. Ask for someone to cut you (3) 22"W x 86"D pieces.

Step 2

Sand and wipe down each panel with an orbital Sander. Make sure you hit the edges as well ( you can use a hand sander for that).

Step 3

Coat with a Polyurethane sealer + stain (if you want). I chose not to stain mine for quickness and the unfinished look. You can sand/coat/dry up to three times depending on the finish you’re going for on the bed frame.

Step 4

Place your boards and hard wear according to the directions provided (very easy). The only thing I wish was mentioned that was not, is that it is important to keep the ratchet straps up at the top of your hard wear pieces when tightening the straps.

Until I pushed the straps up and tighted at the top, it was hard for me to get a stable balance of it all.
